Gohar Sargsyan

Born in 1981 in Gyumri, Armenia, Gohar Sargsyan is a multidisciplinary artist whose work traverses painting, textile design, installation, video art, and animation. Her academic journey includes studies in Art History at the State Academy of Fine Arts of Armenia and Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, culminating in a degree in Animation from the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinematography in 2016.​

Sargsyan's art delves into themes of social interaction, self-identification, and the essence of humanity. Her projects often invite audience participation, fostering a dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. Notably, her installation "Poetic Dialogue" revives Western Armenian poetry through interactive experiences, encouraging visitors to engage with and contribute to the poetic tradition .​

Her solo exhibition "Strangers in the Room," displayed at the National Library of Armenia, explored the psychological impact of the pandemic, highlighting themes of loneliness and alienation . 

This project featured a sound installation titled "Voices," presenting personal stories and emotional challenges shared by individuals, further emphasizing the communal aspect of her work.

Sargsyan's contributions to the art world have been recognized internationally. She has participated in exhibitions such as the Biennale Aktuelle Musik in Germany, Prague Biennale in the Czech Republic, and the Odesa Photo Days Festival in Ukraine. Her works have also been showcased at the John B. Aird Gallery in Canada and the Yerevan Biennial Art Foundation.​

In addition to her exhibitions, Sargsyan has led workshops at institutions like the Goethe Institute and the International Women’s Association of Yerevan (IWAY), sharing her expertise and fostering artistic growth within communities. Her project "The Return of Western Armenian Poets" was selected for a grant by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and is set to be implemented in 2024.​

Through her diverse body of work, Gohar Sargsyan continues to explore the complexities of human experience, inviting audiences to reflect, engage, and find connection within the shared narratives of art.​
