Kevork Mourad

Born in 1970 in Qamishli, Syria, Kevork Mourad is a Syrian-Armenian visual artist whose work transcends traditional boundaries, weaving together painting, performance, and music into a singular, immersive experience. After earning his Master of Fine Arts from the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts in Armenia, Mourad established his practice in New York City, where he continues to explore the intersections of art and sound.

Mourad is renowned for his "spontaneous painting" technique, wherein he creates live drawings in harmony with musical performances. This method has led to collaborations with esteemed musicians and ensembles, including clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, the Silk Road Ensemble led by Yo-Yo Ma, and the Scottish harpist Maeve Gilchrist. His performances have graced stages at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Aga Khan Museum, among others.

His visual art often delves into themes of memory, displacement, and cultural heritage, reflecting his own experiences as a descendant of Armenian refugees.

Notable exhibitions include "Immortal City" at the Rose Art Museum, which paid homage to Aleppo's rich history, and "Seeing Through Babel," a monumental installation exploring communication and miscommunication across cultures. In 2025, his solo exhibition "When Time Was Like a River" was showcased at Perrotin Shanghai, further cementing his international acclaim.

Beyond the canvas, Mourad has contributed to theater and film, co-producing plays like "Tangled Yarn" and "Waterlogged," and creating animated films such as "Four Acts for Syria," which honors the cultural wealth of his homeland. His dedication to arts education is evident through his work with the Silk Road Project, bringing art into classrooms across New York's boroughs.

Through his multifaceted practice, Kevork Mourad invites audiences into a dialogue between the visual and the auditory, the personal and the universal, crafting narratives that resonate across time and space.
